Ceramic tiles in a new home-can they be painted? Postby linemay16 » May 9th, 2010, 8:43 am

I am moving into a different home with tan ceramic tiles in good condition in the bathroom. I am not a big fan of the color, and would like to paint them-is this possible and what is entailed?

It depends if they are the fllor or the wall.

I have seen an epoxy type paint for tiles, but I don't think it would be any good for the floor as you would scuff and scrape it when walking on it.

But for the walls I think it should work fine.

Do yourself a big huge favor; deal with the color until you can have the tile replaced. To paint the tiles would be such a pain that you would regret it. Tiles have the finish baked on, you will not be able to scratch them evenly, and you will end up replacing them anyway. Could you possibly paint accent colors on them, perhaps, but that will not resolve your problem.

Fired tiles are virtually pore free and wont accept paint...Might I suggest you try to scratch them with a very course sandpaper to give a place for paint to adhere to?..Kinda a hard thing to do...check with a hardware store to see if they DO have something you could use...good luck.....

Yes. It's a multi-step process, and your bathroom (shower and bath) won't be usable while it's going on.
